ECM Mechanika Max II: all the new features

Among home espresso machines featuring a heat exchanger system, ECM has renewed one of its most popular models with the new Mechanika Max II.

The new version retains the features that made the Mechanika Max so popular — its compact dimensions, classic design, E61 group head, and rotary pump — while introducing several important innovations, particularly in temperature control, heat-up speed, and settings customization.

The Mechanika Max II is available in two versions: stainless steel and black. For those who want to further customize the machine's appearance, a Wiedemann wood kit is also available in olive wood or walnut finishes.

ECM Mechanika Max II: key features

From a construction standpoint, the Mechanika Max II retains several of the key features of the previous version.

The water tank has a capacity of 3 liters, while the machine is equipped with a 2-liter stainless steel boiler.

The pump is rotary, which is particularly interesting for home use because it allows the machine to be connected directly to a water supply.

But the most interesting innovations can be found inside the machine. Let's take a closer look.

BTS System and Fast Heat-Up

One of the most interesting new features of the Mechanika Max II is the BTS — Brew Temperature Control System.

This system allows the temperature of the brew group to be precisely controlled and adjusted, helping to maintain greater temperature stability during espresso preparation.

The E61 group head of the Mechanika Max II has also been significantly upgraded. Its configuration is the same as the one used on the ECM Synchronika II and incorporates a dedicated heating element inside the group.

The result is a particularly fast heat-up time: the Mechanika Max II is ready to use in approximately 12 minutes.

A New Approach to the Heat Exchanger

Another important innovation concerns the way the heat exchanger system is configured.

In a traditional HX system, water can circulate through a recirculation circuit involving the brew group. When the machine remains unused for a certain period, this configuration can contribute to an increase in group temperature and, consequently, a higher brewing temperature.

ECM has modified this system in the Mechanika Max II by removing one of the inlets used in the traditional configuration.

The remaining inlet manages the flow of water into the brew group, drawing it from the lower section of the boiler. This helps reduce the risk of group overheating.

The result is a system designed to combine the benefits of a heat exchanger with more precise control over both brewing temperature and steam temperature.

Three steam temperature settings

The Mechanika Max II also allows you to choose between three different steam temperature settings, making it possible to adapt the machine's performance to your needs.

The available settings are:

Low: 124°C

Medium: 127°C

High: 130°C

Steam temperature management works together with the BTS system and the new heat exchanger configuration, helping to maintain stable group temperature even while using the steam wand.

OLED Display: small, discreet, and comprehensive

One of the features we particularly appreciated about the Mechanika Max II is its OLED display.

The display is discreet and perfectly integrated into the machine's design, yet it provides access to a surprisingly large number of settings.

Two small buttons located underneath the display allow you to navigate through the menu and adjust the machine's various parameters.

And it is precisely in the settings menu that the Mechanika Max II shows one of its most significant improvements over the previous version.

Let's take a look at all the available functions.

Brew Temperature

The default brewing temperature is set to 92°C, but it can be adjusted according to your preferences.

The available range is from 90°C to 95°C.

This allows you to adapt the brewing temperature to the type of coffee you are using and to the result you want to achieve in the cup.

Steam Temperature

The menu also allows you to select the steam temperature, with three available settings:

Low: 124°C

Medium: 127°C

High: 130°C

Pre-infusion: Active and Passive Pre-infusion

One of the most interesting features of the Mechanika Max II is the ability to set active and passive pre-infusion separately.

But how does it work?

Let's say you set 4 seconds of active pre-infusion and 5 seconds of passive pre-infusion.

When brewing starts, the pump runs for the first 4 seconds. The pump then stops for 5 seconds. During this phase, water continues to wet the coffee puck without increasing pump pressure.

Once the 5 seconds of passive pre-infusion are complete, the pump starts again, bringing the system up to pressure and beginning the extraction.

For those who want manual control over water flow, the ECM Flow Control can also be installed as a separate accessory.

Eco Mode

The Mechanika Max II also features an Eco mode designed to reduce energy consumption when the machine is not being used.

You can choose how many minutes of inactivity should elapse before Eco mode is activated, with a range from 30 to 600 minutes.

Cleaning Reminder

To help keep the machine in optimal condition, you can set a cleaning reminder.

The number of extractions can be configured from 10 to 200. Once the selected number is reached, the machine will remind you to do the cleaning procedure.

Reset Reminder

After cleaning the machine and replacing the filters, you can reset the reminders, returning the counter to zero and starting a new cycle.

Advanced Settings on the ECM Mechanika Max II

By activating the Advanced User Settings, you gain access to additional menu functions.

Filter Reminder

This function allows you to set a reminder for replacing the water filter, helping you remember to carry out regular maintenance.

Clock Set

This menu option allows you to set the time and day of the week.

Setting the clock is necessary to use the machine's automatic scheduling function correctly.

Schedule Set

One of the most convenient features of the Mechanika Max II is the ability to program the machine to switch on and off automatically.

You can set two switch-on and switch-off times for each day of the week.

For example, you can program the machine to start heating up before the time you normally want to prepare your first espresso of the day.

Timer Enable

After setting the desired times, you need to activate the Timer Enable function for the schedule to be used by the machine.

Tank Mode

The Mechanika Max II can operate either with its internal water tank or through a direct connection to the water supply.

The Tank Mode function allows you to tell the machine which of the two configurations you are using.

Temperature Unit

You can choose the unit of measurement used to display temperatures:

Celsius (°C)

Fahrenheit (°F)

Offset Correction

The advanced settings also include the Offset Correction function.

Ambient conditions can affect water temperature. To compensate for any differences, you can adjust the temperature offset through the menu.

The value can be set between -10°C and +10°C, while the default setting is 0°C.

What comes in the ECM Mechanika Max II box?

The Mechanika Max II comes with several useful accessories, allowing you to start using the machine right away.

Inside the box, you will find:

a single-spout portafilter

a double-spout portafilter

a 7 g filter basket

a 14 g filter basket

a blind filter for backflushing

a cleaning brush

a tamper

a water filter for the tank

a 1/8″ to 3/8″ BSPP metal hose for connecting the machine to the water supply

The package therefore includes everything you need to start preparing espresso right away.

With the Mechanika Max II, ECM retains some of the key strengths of the previous Mechanika Max, including its compact format, E61 group head, rotary pump, and adjustable brewing temperature, while introducing a series of important upgrades.

These include the BTS system, the brewing group with fast heat-up, and a wide range of customizable settings accessible through the menu.

The result is a machine that retains ECM's classic character while offering a higher level of temperature control, customization, and overall management — all in a compact format that remains well suited to the home environment.
