How to Choose the Right IMS Filter Basket

Choosing the right IMS filter basket may seem confusing at first. Each model is identified by a combination of letters and numbers, making it difficult to understand the differences between them. 

In reality, every part of the code represents a specific feature of the basket, including its diameter, capacity, shape, height, and hole pattern. 

Once you know what these codes mean, finding the right IMS filter basket for your espresso machine becomes much easier. 

Let's use the B70 2TC H24 E as an example and break down what each part of the code stands for. 

Basket Diameter 

The first part of the code identifies the external diameter of the filter basket. This measurement determines which espresso machines and portafilters the basket is compatible with. 

In our example: 

B70 means the basket has a 70 mm diameter. 

To find the correct diameter for your espresso machine, refer to the official IMS compatibility chart below, where you'll find the most common espresso machine brands and their compatible IMS baskets.

Basket Capacity 

The second part of the code indicates the basket's capacity. 

IMS baskets are available in two main versions: 

1T – Single-shot basket 

2T – Double-shot basket, also commonly used with bottomless portafilters 

A fun fact: while the numbers 1 and 2 indicate the number of doses, the "T" stands for "Cup" (Tazza in Italian), making it easy to identify whether the basket is designed for one or two cups. 

Basket Shape 

After the capacity code, you may find either F or C. 

These letters indicate the shape of the basket base: 

F (Flat) – Flat bottom 

C (Convex) – Convex bottom with a slightly rounded profile 

The basket shape affects its internal geometry and, consequently, its actual coffee capacity. 

Basket Height 

The next code specifies the basket height. 

In our example, H24 means the basket is 24 mm tall. 

Basket height directly affects its capacity and must be compatible with both your portafilter and the coffee dose you plan to use. 

As a general recommendation, we suggest using baskets 28 mm or taller with bottomless portafilters to achieve the best results. 

E, M or N: Hole Pattern 

The final letter identifies the hole pattern on the bottom of the basket. 

On our website you'll find IMS baskets with three different perforation patterns: E, M or N. 

Each pattern represents a different hole layout engineered by IMS to optimize extraction for specific basket designs and brewing conditions.
