Celebrating St. Patrick's Day with Irish Coffee: an easy step-by-step preparation guide

St. Patrick's Day is the perfect time to celebrate with a classic Irish drink: Irish Coffee.  

According to legend, the origins of this delicious drink date back to 1942, thanks to Joseph Sheridan, a barman at a restaurant in Shannon Harbor, southern Ireland. 

Since then, Irish Coffee has undergone many twists and interpretations, but tradition calls for an enveloping combination of coffee, strictly Irish whiskey, sugar and whipped cream that is ideal for an evening with friends.  

Here's how to make Irish Coffee in a few easy steps, bringing a little Irish spirit to your cup. 


  • 1 cup of coffee, 90 ml may be enough 
  • 40/45 ml strictly Irish whiskey 
  • 1-2 teaspoons of sugar (depending on your taste) 
  • 30 ml fresh whipped cream 

It only takes a few simple steps to make a great Irish coffee, follow them and it will be a hit for sure! 

1. Prepare the Coffee

Start by brewing a cup of coffee, about 90 ml. You can use your preferred extraction method, but make sure the coffee has a robust and strong flavor to balance the taste of the whiskey. 

2. Heat the mug

Tradition calls for a heat-resistant glass mug; if you have one, now is the time to use it. Preheat your mug by pouring hot water into it for a few moments. This will help keep your Irish Coffee hot longer. 

3. Start with sugar

Drain your cup of hot water and add one or two teaspoons of sugar depending on how sweet you like your drink, even better if it is raw cane sugar. 

4. Add whiskey and coffee

It's time for whiskey, the star of the recipe. One of the most recommended Irish whiskeys that best suits this preparation is Tullamore D.E.W., and we, too, would recommend it for a tradition-like result!

Slowly add the coffee to the cup as well, stirring gently to make sure the sugar dissolves. 

5. Must have: whipped cream

The last touch in Irish Coffee is the whipped cream. Very important is to whip the cream to make it fluffy. Only in this way it will lie on the surface without sinking into the liquid underneath made of coffee and whiskey. Gently slide the cream into your drink with the help of a spoon.
