Handcrafted in Milan, finished in black
The Appartamento has always been the friendliest way into Rocket Espresso, and the Nera gives it a stealthier look. It keeps the full prosumer architecture the brand is known for, a 1.8L copper heat exchanger boiler and a genuine E61 group, inside a footprint of just 274mm wide and 360mm tall, with shorter feet than the rest of the range so it slips under most cabinets. The heat exchanger lets you pull espresso and steam milk at the same time, and the E61 group adds a natural pre-infusion that settles the puck before full pressure. The body is black powder-coated steel, wearing the machine's signature side panels: twelve circles cut through the panel and filled in your chosen colour.
What's new in the 2.0
The 2.0 is a careful evolution rather than a redesign. The drip tray is now deeper, so latte glasses and tall mugs finally fit under the group without juggling. New RGB LED indicators give clear, at-a-glance feedback on water level, temperature and operating state. A water tank sensor lets a shot finish cleanly even when the reservoir runs low, and the internal chassis has been revised with corrosion-resistant components for a longer life. The steam and hot water wands have been reshaped for easier, safer positioning. Everything else that made the original a long-term favourite, the 2.5L removable tank, the 1350W boiler and the vibration pump, carries over unchanged.
What we love
The build: commercial-grade material and a hand-assembled E61 group, not entry-level steel dressed up to look the part. This is a machine that stays on the counter for years.
The look: the black powder-coated finish gives the Appartamento a quieter, more contemporary presence, and it hides fingerprints far better than polished steel.
Things to consider
Finish care: the matte black powder coat resists fingerprints, but wipe away dust and coffee splashes with a soft cloth to keep it looking its best.
No PID or shot timer: the Appartamento stays deliberately simple. If you want temperature control on a display or built-in flow control, look higher up the Rocket range.
